What our 43 travel backpacks offer
As a backpack for travelling, the range states capacities from under 20 litres on our lightweight travel backpack, which weighs just 150 g and is the lightest of the styles that state a weight, to 80 or 100 litres on our large military backpack. In between, the main compartment of our expandable travel backpack extends up to 80 litres, and our 90 L hiking backpack is designed for long treks.
The range also includes seven military or tactical backpacks, six that are insulated or have an insulated pocket, and five with wheels and a telescopic handle, to compare with our other backpacks with wheels. On our laptop backpack with wheels, the padded shoulder straps tuck away.
Many of these styles also help organise the trip. Five open wide, like a suitcase or to 180 or 270 degrees, among them our backpack that opens like a suitcase. Six have a shoe compartment, such as our wide-opening backpack with a shoe compartment, and nine have a USB port for charging on the move. Several are expandable, such as our expandable anti-theft backpack, which goes from about 16 to 23 cm thick, and our men’s roll-top backpack adjusts to the volume you need.
Five have a strap that slides over a luggage handle, such as our waterproof faux leather laptop backpack, and five have anti-theft or hidden pockets, like the hidden back pocket for your wallet and passport on our anti-theft backpack with USB port. You will find more of them among our anti-theft backpacks.
For a travel rucksack that also holds your laptop, many styles have a laptop compartment, stated from 14 inches, as on our men’s canvas laptop backpack with buckles, to 17 inches. Most describe their fabric as waterproof or water-repellent. Four come with a rain cover, among them our 36 to 55 L trekking backpack, and our large laptop backpack is also sold with one. Three have a hip belt, four a chest strap, and several have side pockets for water bottles.
How to choose the right travel backpack
Finding the ideal travel backpack starts with identifying your needs. Whether you are off for a weekend in Europe, a trek in Asia or a round-the-world trip, your bag must combine practicality, comfort and durability.
Capacity and format, the key to efficiency
The capacity of a travel backpack is expressed in litres. For a short stay, a small 30 L bag is enough. For longer trips, choose a large travel backpack, between 40 and 60 L, or even more for a round-the-world trip. Take care not to overload it, as a bag that is too big tempts you to take what you do not need. To travel in the cabin, compare the dimensions stated on the product page with those of your airline. The cabin formats in this selection state, for example, 40 x 30 x 20 cm or 40 x 20 x 25 cm.
Carrying comfort, a must
A good travel bag must offer padded, adjustable shoulder straps, a padded hip belt and a breathable back. These elements spread the load more evenly onto the hips and reduce tiredness. The load lifter straps, the chest strap and the fit to your body shape also play an essential role.
Suitcase backpack, a suitcase-style opening
The suitcase backpack opens along its whole front, so you see all the contents without emptying the bag, as in a suitcase, and you carry it on your back. A spacious main compartment and several zip pockets make it easier to reach your personal belongings. Look for a bag with side pockets, dedicated compartments (laptop, toiletry bag, shoes) and well-designed interior storage. Some styles even offer a removable pouch or a small detachable bag.
To set off with an SLR camera and its lenses, our camera backpacks collection brings together styles with a dedicated camera compartment.
Protection and security when travelling
A secure travel backpack must have lockable zips, hidden pockets against the back and tough fabrics. These options deter pickpockets and protect your valuables. Some styles also offer an anti-slash design or an invisible inside pocket.
Strong, waterproof materials
Favour sturdy materials such as ballistic nylon or reinforced polyester. A built-in waterproof cover or a water-repellent treatment will protect you from the weather. Reinforced seams, strong zips and the option of replacing parts (straps, buckles) extend the life of the bag. For rain, also compare our waterproof backpacks collection.
A versatile bag for every use
Whether for a city break, a trek or long-term travel, the ideal backpack adapts to each situation. A discreet design, compression straps, side handles or a removable shoulder strap are all details that make the difference. Modular or hybrid bags are increasingly popular with demanding travellers.
In short, a good travel backpack must be light, strong, comfortable and well organised. Choose a style suited to your body shape, the length of your stay and the demands of transport. Invest in quality to travel light… and for longer.
